Five die of pox-like disease at Mariani Tea Estate

May 2 (NL Web Desk): Five persons have died within a month after suffering from a pox-like disease at a tea estate in Mariani in Jorhat district of Assam. Officials said all five persons who died at Duklingia Tea Estate did not consult doctors even after their condition deteriorated and were advised to seek immediate medical attention.
The five deceased have been identified as Radkunu Murmu, Sauyakshi Tanti, Maliraw Chwra, Bishuwa Kurmi and Alipon Rajbongshi.
Instead of taking modern medication, the families resorted to seeking help from quacks following which their health deteriorated resulting in their death.
Healthcare facilities in several tea estates are quite abysmal while superstitious garden labourers don’t seek doctors’ advice if they suffer from diseases such as pox and measles.
