Seeking to rollout proposed population policy, Assam Govt to write to Centre seeking amendment in Representation of People Act

May 4 (NL Web Desk): The Assam Government is mulling the option of writing to the central government, seeking amendments to the Representation of People Act so as to bar candidates having more than two children from contesting assembly and Parliamentary elections from Assam. The move is aimed at covering elected representatives from Assam under the proposed population policy mooted by State Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The Assam Health Minister said in order to ensure that elected representatives in assembly and parliamentary level are also brought under the ambit of the proposed population policy, the Assam Government will recommend the Centre to implement the proposed two-child policy mooted by the State Health department and bring elected representatives from Assam under the proposed population policy.
Himanta Bisaw Sarma, however, said the new policy will include a few exceptions, including the birth of twins or triplets and on humanitarian grounds on case-to-case basis.
On the other hand, the Assam Health Minister said the draft Population & Women Empowerment Policy also proposes incentives for widows and women slapped with triple talaq by their husbands on flimsy grounds. He also announced tougher laws against husbands who divorce their wives on flimsy grounds.
The government will also sensitize people using the services of NGOs, Sarma added.
