Now, policewoman arrested in Guwahati for wrongfully confining trader, releasing him for Rs 4 lakh

May 19 (NL Web Desk): A police women, a sub-inspector of the STF, has been arrested for wrongfully confining a garage owner and then allegedly releasing him after forcing him to make a payment of Rs 4 lakh. Guwahati Police arrested STF sub-inspector Dipali Barua today besides detaining her husband. A team of Guwahati Police arrested the woman cop and also picked up her husband from Dhubri.
The arrested policewoman, who is alleged to have amassed properties disproportionate to her known sources of income, has been accused of wrongfully confining a garage owner named Biren Haloi at the STF office in Bhangagarh locality of Guwahati after picking him up from his garage. Haloi said he was whisked away in a vehicle by five persons — two dressed in casual outfits and three in police uniforms — and taken to Udalbakra first and then to the STF head office at Bhangagarh.
Haloi further alleged Dipali Barua demanded Rs 10 lakh from his family for his “release” and finally agreed at Rs 4 lakh, adding that the policewoman had even threatened to put him behind bars besides sealing his garage if the demand was not met. And it was only after the said amount was paid that he was released, the garage owner said.
The arrested STF SI, however, has rejected taking any money from Haloi and has even rubbished his accusation of wrongfully confinement.
Police later carried a raid at the palatial house of the arrested woman sub-inspector and recovered, among others 12-14 bank passbooks, several ATM cards and around seven life insurance policy documents.
Police are quizzing the arrested woman cop and her husband besides looking into her sources of income, particularly in the wake of the properties she owns.
