PM Modi dedicates Dhola-Sadiya bridge to nation, bridge to be known as Bhupen Hazarika Setu

May 26 (NL Web Desk): Prime Minister Narendra Modi Friday dedicated the Dhola-Sadiya bridge built over river Lohit, a tributary of the Brahmaputra, and announced that the Government has decided to name the 9.15-km-long bridge, the longest road bridge in the country, after Dr Bhupen Hazarika. The bridge, Prime Minister Modi said, will be known as the Bhupen Hazarika Setu.
The bridge is strategically important since it is being seen as India’s response to China improving infrastructure and logistics bordering Arunachal Pradesh. The bridge will also reduce travel time from Assam to Arunachal Pradesh by up to four hours.
The bridge has also been designed and constructed in a way to withstand the weight of a 60-tonne battle tank.
Prime Minister Modi also took a drive down the new bridge and then got down from his car and walked for a few metres, enjoying the scenic beauty and greenery.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi arrived at the Mohanbari airport where he was welcomed by Assam Governor Banwarilal Purohit, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and other government and police officials.
After inaugurating the Dhola-Sadiya bridge, Prime Minister Modi flew to Gogamukh in Dhemaji where he laid the foundation stone of the Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR).
