AGP wants two more berths in expanded cabinet; could fight panchayat elections, Dhemaji by-polls alone!

GUWAHATI, Jan 10 (NL Web Desk): The Asom Gana Parishad wants two more berths in the Sarbananda Sonowal-led Assam Government in the cabinet expansion that is expected later this month. AGP general secretary and West Guwahati MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita said the party expects at least two more ministries when the current cabinet is expanded. This and many other resolutions were adopted at the first steering meeting of the newly-formed executive.

“The AGP should get at least four berths in the Assam ministry as per the seat ratio. We have two ministries as on today and should get two more berths when the cabinet expansion takes place,” Ramendra Narayan Kalita said.

On the other hand, the party reiterated it won’t compromise on the issue of awarding citizenship to Hindu Bangladeshis and said foreigners will have to be deported according to the Assam Accord.

“We are firm on our stand on the issue of awarding citizenship to Hindu Bangladeshi nationals. Bangladeshi nationals living in Assam will have to be deported as per the Assam Accord,” AGP president and Assam Agriculture minister Atul Borah said.

Meanwhile, the party says it is ready to contest the upcoming panchayat elections as well as by-polls to Dhemaji LAC if the BJP wishes not to contest jointly in these hustings.
