Deportation of 17 Bangladeshi nationals from Assam postponed

GUWAHATI/SILCHAR, Jan 9 (NL Web Desk & Agencies): The move to deport 17 Bangladeshi nationals, lodged at Silchar Central Jail, to the neighbouring country has hit a roadblock after the External Affairs ministry failed to clear requisite papers, police said Monday. The seventeen Bangladeshi nationals, including two women, were scheduled to have been handed over to Bangladeshi officials today.

They were in fact taken to Karimganj from Silchar prison where they were supposed to have been handed over to Bangladesh. However, police said that since the External Affairs Ministry failed to hand over requisite papers to police, the deportation had to be cancelled.

The Bangladesh nationals were scheduled to cross the border through the Kushiara river and enter their country.

They were later brought back to Silchar Central Jail and are likely to be sent back to their country once the papers are ready.
